Jane's Transalpine Run
Jane Simpson, an LHM volunteer, is going to run the 2010 Gore-Tex Transalpine Run from 4th-11th September 2010 to raise funds for the LHM. This is an epic 8 day race across the Alps, starting in Ruhpolding, Germany, travelling through Austria, and ending in South Tyrol, Italy. It covers 296km and 17,700 metres of ascent, which is equivalent to just over 7 marathons and climbing 19 munros, or running Mount Everest twice! I am a keen runner and have run various road and hill races in the past, although have never attempted anything on this scale. For more information on this race please see: www.transalpine-run.com
How you can help?
Jane hopes to raise as much money as possible for the LHM and as she would be grateful if you would consider sponsoring her on this challenge. All money donated will go to the LHM, so give what you can.

What will happen to donated money?
At the LHM, we aim to break the cycles of homelessness and social exclusion by promoting harm reduction and recovery through a range of interventions and development opportunities. We have helped countless individuals reintegrate back into mainstream society and believe everyone should have this opportunity.
Our drop-in café is open from 8am to 3pm Monday to Friday offering free cereal for breakfast and free soup and sandwiches at lunch time and on Sundays from 4pm to 7pm. Cooked food is also available throughout the day at subsidised prices. Our committed support team are on hand to provide practical help, advocacy and make referrals to other services.
Our new Pathways to Empowerment initiative encourages individuals to develop skills and confidence by participating in short educational programmes. Current courses include cookery, budgeting, computing, drama, art, creative writing and personal development.
As an example of how your money could help:
- £10.00 will give a client one full meal a day for ten days
- £120.00 will pay for tutors' fees for a day for a group of 10 clients in the 'Skilling Up' project
- £200.00 will enable us to take clients out of the homeless environment for an activity weekend, to learn new ways of structuring their lives.
Jane has been volunteering for the LHM for 18 months and was inspired by the hard work and commitment of all the staff and volunteers to continue to provide essential services to the most vulnerable of our community. The LHM does not receive any government funding and relies entirely on the goodwill of others for support.
